Vermilion River Mussel Projects – from reintroductions to dam removal

North American freshwater mussels have undergone drastic decline during the past century, and subsequently have become one of the most imperiled groups of animals. Of the approximate 350 species of freshwater mussels native to North America, nearly three-quarters are extinct, federally–listed as endangered or threatened, or are in need of conservation status. The first project is Steps Taken During the Reintroduction of Two Federally-Endangered Mussels, which will reflect how a salvage project in Pennsylvania has provided an opportunity for the translocation of two federally-endangered freshwater mussels back into Illinois. The second project is Effects of Lowhead Dams on Freshwater Mussels, which will discuss the two upcoming dam removals occurring in the basin and how these dams appear to have affected the freshwater mussel assemblage.
Jeremy has been a Field Biologist / Aquatic Zoologist specializing in stream ecology with the Illinois Natural History Survey since 2002. As a farm kid growing up in northeastern Kansas, he traipsed through streams in his free time chasing various critters. This passion led him to a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Kansas in 1998 and a Master of Science in Biological Sciences from Emporia State University in 2002. His professional research interests include stream ecology and life history of non-game fishes and freshwater mollusks.

Paddle Camping Bucket List
Presented by Mark and Merri Morral
Every paddler should have a bucket list of must do adventures, not necessarily ones they’ll need to quit their job for the time off, or take out a second mortgage to pay for them; adventures tuned for “normal” paddlers. Through a multimedia show the Morralls will present you with five such adventures, scattered to the four corners as well as in the middle of our great nation. Ranging from three to six days with options to extend even them even longer, these trips are sure to please.
For the Morralls, paddling is far more than a hobby or pastime, it’s been their way of life for over twenty-five years. Mark and Merri have been involved in all aspects of the sport, from paddling wild whitewater rivers, to canoe tripping in the Northern Canadian wilderness. Being so totally immersed in the sport of paddling has given them an opportunity to become deeply involved in clubs, organizations, environmental issues that affect paddling, even political issues involving river access rights and management. Their experience has also given them a clear feeling for what appeals to paddlers and how to reach them.
Paddling, and the amazing people involved in the sport, has given them so much pleasure that they’ve made a commitment to give back what they’ve received, and then some. Mark and Merri’s lifelong goal is to reach out to, and draw as many people as they can into, experiencing our natural world from the seat of a canoe or kayak.

Kevin Proescholdt of Minneapolis has worked for nearly 40 years to protect the million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in northeastern Minnesota. He guided canoe trips in the area for a decade, and became an active volunteer in the national effort to successfully pass the 1978 BWCAW Act through Congress. Proescholdt has worked for nearly 35 years for nonprofit conservation organizations, including 16 years as the executive director of the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. He currently works as the conservation director for Wilderness Watch, a national wilderness conservation organization based in Missoula, where he continues his efforts to protect the BWCAW and other wildernesses across the nation. His first wilderness book, Troubled Waters: The Fight for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, told the story of the effort to protect the BWCAW as a Wilderness. His new wilderness book, Glimpses of Wilderness, is a collection of wilderness essays from the Boundary Waters that describe some of the many values and meanings of Wilderness.
I am wondering if any of the group is interested in an earlier paddle group out at pierce lake on Tuesdays. Maybe 4-6. The 6-8 gets a bit late for those of us who work early in the morning.
