Mother Nature and a thunderstorm forced a change of plans before the trip ever go underway. After meeting at Culver’s, we decided to eat at Deb’s Squeeze Inn rather than wait to eat until midway through the trip as was originally planned. We all ate breakfast (some had the blue gill and egg special) and then proceeded to Dalmans to put in. While shuttle took some time, it was completed rather smoothly and all were underway at about 10:30. Initially, the lake provided some 1 foot waves but nobody seemed to have much trouble. Even the new paddlers did well. The wind was from the northwest so as we proceeded down the lake toward the river, everything flattened out and the river was quite smooth. We paddled about 4.5 miles in all. Since the gates to the landing were locked, we had to take out at the DNR station next door. I had gotten the mysterious Brian’s permission to do so earlier in the week, and this proved to be no problem. After retrieving cars we loaded and stopped at Fin’s for drinks, appetizers, and, of course, black bean bread. The trip went well in spite of the storm and everyone seemed to go home happy. I would like to give a special thanks to Bill Hamm. Since he had been working all night, he skipped the paddle, but drove the 40 miles up to eat breakfast with the group and to help with the shuttle and launching.
